“I am a sensitive artist. Nobody understands me because I am so deep” (King Missile 2004)
Artist Statement
My artistic style is called “Back Painted Glass.” This technique involves painting on the reverse side of glass, creating abstract, frameless works that appear to float slightly off the wall. The process involves multiple layers of paint, with the first layer becoming the foreground. Much of the process involves partially removing previous layers to create evolving compositions.
I use tempered and non-tempered glass, often repurposed from discarded sources to emphasize sustainability. I use acrylic paint and incorporate materials like ground dichroic glass, color-shifting paints, mica, and iridescent pigments, adding unpredictability to each piece. This combination of materials allows for unique effects.
My approach to art is inspired by the natural world, particularly the sky. The vastness, changing light, and beauty of sunsets often spark my creative process. I frequently photograph these moments and incorporate them into my artwork. Music also plays a crucial role, with parallels between auditory and visual elements, such as the steady drone in Eastern music and the recurring textures in my paintings.
My most compelling pieces emerge when I paint intuitively, without a specific plan. I create a serene, meditative atmosphere and let my mind drift, selecting colors and shapes at random. This process-oriented approach often leads to unexpected and profound results.
Philosophy and spirituality deeply influence my work. Practices from yoga and meditation inspire the dreamlike qualities in my paintings. These experiences are reflected in themes like consciousness, awareness, perception, joy, ecstasy, contemplation, and enlightenment.
